Fellaini stuns Man Utd

Robin van Persie's much-anticipated debut for Manchester United failed to prevent Everton delivering an early reality check in their bid to regain the Premier League title.

While defending champions and near-neighbours City achieved a come-from-behind win against Southampton yesterday the Red Devils were second best for most of the night at Goodison Park.

The thorn in their side was midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who was a constant threat and deservedly capped an impressive performance with the only goal early in the second half.

Van Persie, a £24million acquisition from Arsenal, was brought in to provide the additional firepower needed to challenge City but in a late substitute appearance he did not register a shot on target.

His team-mates had not done much better in the previous 70 minutes , however, as the Toffees dominated.

It was the first time United had failed to win their opening fixture since 2008 but it was a first victory in five seasons for the Toffees, perennial slow starters.

For once, though, they began the campaign where they had left off as after losing eight of their first 14 league games last season they went on a nine-match unbeaten run up to its conclusion.

One of those was a 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in which Fellaini played a key part, scoring in one of his more dominant performances, to help swing the title race in City's favour.

Sir Alex Ferguson should have learned from that but he was hamstrung by the fact United started the match with just two recognised defenders: Nemanja Vidic, who had not played since December because of knee injury, and Patrice Evra, whose future has been a matter for debate all summer.

Winger Antonio Valencia was deployed at right-back while midfielder Michael Carrick was positioned alongside Vidic in the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand.

That was a telling factor in David De Gea being the busiest - and most impressive - player in the first half.

However, he was run a close second by Fellaini, playing just behind striker Nikica Jelavic, who was the dominant force in United's penalty area.

The Belgium international had already headed over Leighton Baines' corner before he collected a throw-in and turned into the penalty area, holding off Carrick, to hit the post from the narrowest of angles.

He was also the creator as his aerial power and strength on the ball saw him chest one back for Steven Pienaar to slice wide and then knock down a cross which Leon Osman did superbly well to hit on the turn only for De Gea to bat away the shot.

The United goalkeeper, who arrived last season from Atletico Madrid and quickly earned a reputation for being suspect under pressure which he took a while to shake off, was on top form throughout.

He denied Jelavic, tipped over a long-range Pienaar header and flung himself to his left to save the South Africa midfielder's low shot before preventing Baines' deflected free-kick sneaking into the top corner.

But it was not all one-way traffic as United had chances of their own, though not as good or as numerous as their hosts.

Danny Welbeck, the player with most to lose from Van Persie's arrival, had one shot blocked by Phil Jagielka and hooked another wide under pressure from the centre-back.

Former Evertonian Wayne Rooney was quiet by his standards, hitting two shots too close to Tim Howard and seeing a late first-half header punched clear. Fellaini's ravaging of the United defence continued after the interval as his header across goal was smashed against the crossbar by Leon Osman with De Gea, for once, beaten.

And the big Belgian was finally rewarded for his outstanding display with a goal in the 57th minute when former Red Devil Darron Gibson swung over a corner and he left Carrick sprawling on the turf to power home a header.

The presence of one of United's other summer signings Shinji Kagawa in the starting line-up had prompted a slight tweak in formation to accommodate the advanced role favoured by the attacking midfielder.

He had plenty of good touches around the penalty area, the best of which in the second half teed up Welbeck who was denied by Jagielka's perfectly-judged tackle. The Everton defender's timing was even better when he cleared Tom Cleverley's shot off the line before, in the 68th minute, Van Persie was finally sent on.

Rooney moved out to the left to allow the Dutchman to slot in up front but it was Kagawa who was next to threaten, forcing Howard to race off his line to block his run and shot.

Everton had won only twice at home against United in 17 years but this result proved, if they can maintain a half-decent start, they are destined for bigger things this season.

Everton, City agree Rodwell fee

Jack Rodwell appears on the verge of joining Manchester City after Everton agreed a fee with the English Premier League champions.

Everton confirmed in a statement released on their website they had reached an agreement with City over the transfer of the midfielder. Rodwell will undergo a medical with City on Sunday.

The 21-year-old came through the youth ranks at Everton and has made over 100 first-team appearances under manager David Moyes.

His career has stalled somewhat due to regular injury problems and he was restricted to just 14 league games last season.

Rodwell had been widely expected to make Stuart Pearce's Great Britain squad for the London 2012 Olympics, but was forced to withdraw after suffering yet another injury blow prior to the tournament.

Rodwell handed his first full England cap by Fabio Capello in November 2011, making a substitute appearance during a 1-0 friendly victory over Spain.

The former Under-21 international is set to become Roberto Mancini's first purchase of the close season should the move be confirmed.

Joseph Yobo completes exit from Everton

The Nigerian defender spent the last two seasons on loan at the Turkish side after losing his first team place at Goodison Park, and has now signed a permanent three-year contract.

The 31-year-old defender signed a three-year contract with the Turkish giants after spending the last two seasons on loan at the club.

The Nigeria captain is also expected to earn €2m (£1.5m) per year.

Yobo lost his place at the heart of David Moyes' back four after Johnny Heitinga and Sylvain Distin arrived at Goodison Park.

The former Marseille defender was expected to complete his move last week but talks broke down over additional demands made by the Toffees, regarding a bonus payment related to European appearances made by the Nigerian.

Yobo made over 250 appearances for the Merseyside club since arriving from Ligue 1 in 2002.

Pienaar returns to Everton

Everton have completed the signing of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham on a four-year contract.

The South African has cost the Merseyside outfit 4.5 million pounds and returns to Goodison Park after spending the second half of last season on loan there with the Toffees.

Pienaar moved to Everton in July 2007 on loan from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund before signing on a permanent basis the following year.

He moved to Spurs in January 2011 but failed to establish himself under Harry Redknapp and rejoined the Toffees.

Speaking about his return to the club, he told evertontv: "I am happy to be here. It took a few weeks to sort out but I am delighted to be back and excited to play for Everton.

"There was no doubt in my mind that I would be back here. At the end of the season I told the manager how I felt and I am happy now it is all done." Everton boss David Moyes had revealed earlier in the summer that his main target was to complete a deal for Pienaar.

The Toffees kick-off their Premier League campaign with a tricky home fixture against last season’s runners-up Manchester United.

Everton slap £17m price tag on Baines to deter Manchester United

Manchester United's pursuit of Leighton Baines remains in the early stages despite recent speculation that a deal is close to completion.

We understand that the interest from Old Trafford has not yet progressed beyond informal discussions.

Should United step up their chase, Everton intend to remain firm in their resolve to hang on to England's deputy left-back.

It is understood that the Merseysiders privately value Baines at £17 million, a sum they feel could be beyond what United are willing to pay.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team have been priced out of moves for Luka Modric, Eden Hazard and Wesley Sneijder in recent times.

As reported earlier this month, United fringe players such as Ji-Sung Park and the Da Silva twins Fabio and Rafael have been mentioned as possible sweeteners in a deal for Baines.

Nevertheless, Everton manager David Moyes is said to be privately belligerent in his desire to keep hold of the former Wigan man, despite the Toffees' financial problems.

The 27-year-old was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year following an outstanding 2011-12 campaign and Everton's system is built around his raids from left-back.

He is also the team's set-piece specialist. Speaking at the end of May, Baines described United's reported interest in him as a big compliment: "The United link is flattering.

There is no harm in people talking about it because it is a great club.

But I'm at a great club as well, a club that I love.

Would it be hard to turn United down? I'm not letting my focus shift to that while I am in camp [with England]. I'm focused on what I'm doing at the moment.

Would it be hard to leave Everton? Yes, obviously. You know what it means.

I've been there for five years myself but also know first-hand what it means to a lot of people so, yes, it would be."

Everton’s Victor Anichebe to replace Victor Moses at Wigan

With the beginning of the 2012/13 English Premier League season about 60 days away, transfer dealings are going up a notch.

And as Wigan are readying themselves for the loss of their inspirational winger Victor Moses to one of the top clubs in the Premiership, they have identified another Nigerian, Everton’s Victor Anichebe as his possible replacement.

Anichebe has been plagued by a lot of injuries but at just 24 years old, the Roberto Martinez side might be willing to take the risk.

Anichebe has made 135 appearances in all competitions, mostly as a substitute and has scored 18 goals since he made his debut in the 2005/06 season.

Though mostly he has been played on the wings by Everton’s coach David Moyes. And rated at £6million, he will be a bargain if Dave Whelan gets his way by selling Moses for £10 million and above.

Moses has one year left on his contract after joining from Crystal Palace for £2.5million in 2010.

“We’ve made him a very good offer involving a doubling of his wages over three years,” said Dave Whelan.

It’s down to whether the lad listens to sense or his agent,” Whelan added. But Moses is keeping his cool over all the speculation and said,

I’ve heard a lot of offers are on the table. Wigan have the final say but, for me, the highest bidder would take the day. But right now I’m a Wigan man.”
