Liverpool beat Arsenal to sign Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin on a season long loan

The Reds offered to pay a larger proportion of the 23-year-old's £115,000 a week wages, swinging the deal in their favour.

Sahin, who has 31 caps for Turkey, will undergo a medical ahead of the match against Manchester City on Sunday. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is now considering a number of other targets.

Sahin had been expected to join Arsenal, having privately expressed a preference for the north London club. But the deal stalled when Real and Arsenal could not agree a £14m option to buy the player at the end of the loan.

Liverpool and Real then agreed a deal, with Sahin's agent meeting Liverpool officials earlier in the week to agree terms.

Real boss Jose Mourinho had given the go ahead for Sahin to move to the Premier League after the playmaker struggled to make an impression at the Bernabeu since a move from Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund last summer.

Sahin signed a six-year deal with the La Liga outfit but made just 11 appearances for them last season as they won the Spanish league title.

Liverpool complete Oussama Assaidi signing

Liverpool have completed the signing of Oussama Assaidi from Dutch side SC Heerenveen.

Assaidi, 24, joins for around £3 million and passed a medical at Melwood before signing a long-term deal with the club.

He scored 10 times in the Dutch League last season and Rodgers thinks he will become a crowd pleaser at Anfield.

"We're delighted with the signing, he's a young player who has done very well, in particular in the last couple of seasons, in Holland," he said.

"He fits our style perfectly, he's an exciting player who is very good in one versus one situations and I think he's a player that will excite the crowd.

"We're not expecting too much too early, he needs time to adapt but we're delighted he's chosen to come here over a number of other clubs.

As I said, I'll look forward to helping his development and I hope he'll become a very good part of this club."

Assaidi, a Morocco international, has scored 20 goals in 68 appearances for Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie. He becomes Brendan Rodgers' third signing following the arrivals of Fabio Borini and Joe Allen and will take the No. 11 shirt last worn by Maxi Rodriguez .

He said Rodgers helped persuade him join Liverpool instead of Fulham and Ajax. He told the club website: "I'm very happy to play for this big club.

The first time I spoke to the coach I had a good feeling. I had offers from other big clubs but I've been waiting for this moment. "The coach gave me a good feeling.

It will be a dream to play with these big players and I hope training will help me to be a good player here. When I watch Liverpool it's always a good atmosphere, the fans are fantastic and I'm happy to be here."

Downing scorcher hands Reds first-leg Europa League advantage

Liverpool looked well off the pace in the first half, with the Belarusians’ greater fitness and match practice showing, and the home side had a number of good chances to score, especially through striker Aleksandr Alumona.

The second period continued in a similar vein, with Gomel creating chances but failing to convert, and they were made to pay by Stewart Downing, who left fly with a superb long-range shot to give the Reds a precious win and away goal.

The home side selected a strong line-up for this first leg clash, captained by midfielder Mikalay Kashewski, and with Dzmitry Platonaw the lone striker up front.

Meanwhile, Liverpool selected an experienced side, captained by Jamie Carragher to commemorate his 700th appearance for the club, and also including Steven Gerrard and new signing Fabio Borini up front.

The first half began in a deafening atmosphere at Gomel’s Central Stadion and at a fast pace, as both sides looked to gain the upper hand early in the game.

It took until the 12th minute for either side to create a chance, as Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique drove in a dangerous cross from the left that Gomel goalkeeper Vladimir Bushma could only palm away to safety.

Unfortunately for the away side, Joe Cole had to be taken off with an injury in the 23rd minute, and he was replaced by youngster Raheem Stirling in the Liverpool midfield.

That break to play seemed to energise the home side while simultaneously shocking their opponents, as almost immediately, Gerrard was caught in possession by Platanow, whose cross was headed over by Igor Voronokov.

Gomel gained the upper hand from this point on, and from a corner in the 26th minute, Aleksandr Alumona found himself unmarked in the penalty area, but could only send his shot wide of Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal.

Just three minutes later, Alumona had an even better chance, as he muscled his way past Martin Skrtel, but could only shoot straight at Jones when he could easily have scored.

Liverpool looked shell-shocked and off the pace during the first half-hour of the game, with Gerrard making a number of uncharacteristic errors in midfield and new signing Borini unable to get on the ball.

The 39th minute saw Alumona cause more havoc among the Liverpool defenders, as again he saw off the pressure of Skrtel to again shoot straight into Jones’ body. From the resulting corner, Platanow headed over the bar, with Gomel increasing the pressure on Liverpool’s goal.

Two minutes later, Alumona had yet another chance on goal, as some sloppy communication between Jones, Skrtel and Glen Johnson allowed him to break free and force yet another corner for Gomel after a last-ditch tackle.

The resulting corner saw another superb chance for Gomel, as Sergei Kazeka found himself free at the back post, but could only put his shot over the bar.

The second half began in a similar vein, and with less than a minute gone, Platanow was nearly in again, as he managed to touch a through-ball past Jones, who charged out of his penalty area.

However, the Belarusian’s touch was too heavy, and yet another chance went begging.

It took Liverpool until the 49th minute to create an opening, as Borini took a pass from Enrique just outside the penalty area, but could only shoot straight at Gomel’s goalkeeper Bushma.

After a promising spell for the away side, Gomel had three golden chances in quick succession in the 64th minute, as Kazeka’s long-range shot hit the post, before a sliced shot from Alumona found Platanow, who shot wide.

Then, against the run of play, Liverpool took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game.

The ball made its way to Stewart Downing, who had previously been anonymous in the game up until that point.

Downing cut in from the right, and shot home from outside the box to give the Reds a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute, and a precious away goal.

The home side looked shell-shocked after that very unexpected development, but could have equalised in the 87th minute as Alumona’s shot from outside the penalty area brushed the side-netting.

However, Liverpool held on, and recorded a victory to ensure Rodgers' era got off to the perfect start.

Carroll will only leave Liverpool for Newcastle

Reports reaching us claims Andy Carroll will only leave Liverpool if it's for a return to former club Newcastle.

West Ham had a season-long loan bid, believed to be around £2million, accepted for the England striker on Monday evening.

The deal could see the Hammers then pay up to £17million in 12months' time, should the east London club stay in the Premier League.

Former side Newcastle had a £13million bid rejected earlier this summer as Liverpool look to get back more of the £35million they paid for him in January 2011.

But it's now understood that the Three Lions hitman is so desperate for a Tyneside return he is prepared to stay at Liverpool, rather than join West Ham, even though he knows he is not wanted at the club.

Official : West Ham agree loan fee with Liverpool

West Ham United have agreed a £2m loan fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll. The season-long deal for the England striker would be with a view to a permanent transfer of £17m, provided West Ham stay in the Premier League.

However, it is thought the 23-year-old does not wish to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis.

The Reds turned down a bid from Newcastle to re-sign the player, having bought him from the Magpies for a club record fee of £35m in January 2011.

Carroll, who scored one goal for his country at Euro 2012, has struggled since his big-money move, having scored just 11 goals in 56 appearances.

He appears to have become surplus to requirements at Anfield following the arrival of former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers and the signing of Italian striker Fabio Borini from Roma.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had hoped to bring the former Toon Army favourite back to the club.

Rodgers had said Liverpool would not consider a loan move for the player, but the Northern Irishman now appears prepared to allow Carroll, 23, to link up with former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce at Upton Park.

Carroll had also been linked with a transfer to Italian side AC Milan.

The striker began his career at Newcastle, spending a season on loan at Preston, before returning to the club and becoming top-scorer in the 2009-10 season as the Magpies returned to the Premier League.

Carroll collected a League Cup winner's medal with Liverpool last season, starting in the Wembley final against Cardiff City.

Liverpool Accept Offer For Alberto Aquilani And Close In On Swansea star

Liverpool have accepted an undisclosed offer – believed to be around £7 million – from Fiorentina for midfield misfit Alberto Aquilani.

The Italian has flown home from the Reds’ pre-season tour of the United States to finalise the move.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers is set to spend to proceeds on Swansea and Team GB star Joe Allen, who is valued at around £15 million.

Signed for £20 million from Roma by Rafa Benitez, Aquilani never settled on Merseyside and has spent the last two seasons on loan in his native Italy.

The 28-year-old made just two appearances under Roy Hodgson and none under Kenny Dalglish but Rodgers appeared ready to give the playmaker a fresh start at Anfield.

But the Northern Irish tactician has been told to sell before he can buy and has accepted a considerable loss on the Italian, who still has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract.

The Reds are expected to make a formal offer for Allen as soon as Aquilani completes his move to Florence. A clause in Allen’s contract means Liverpool must pay £15 million for the 22-year-old pass-master.

Liverpool & Manchester City target Ramirez set for Premier League move

Bologna winger Gaston Ramirez is likely to move to the Premier League amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester City, according to his agent.

The Uruguayan is currently in England with his country for the Olympic Games and his representative has indicated that he could stay there amid interest from the champions .

As revealed in May that City were leading the chase for the Uruguay international and his representative, Pablo Betancur, has revealed he is in talks with an English top-flight club.

Speaking to calciomercato.com about Ramirez’s future, Betancur said: "I think it's always been more likely that Gaston says goodbye to Italy.

So much so that now I'm in London to talk with a Premier League club.

"I think Ramirez will leave. He is one of the best players and so there are many offers and, again, I think it's unlikely he will remain in Italy."

The winger scored eight goals for Bologna in Serie A last season to help them to a ninth-placed finish and had attracted interest from the likes of Inter and Wolfsburg but Betancur admits Bologna’s asking price is too high for them.

He added: "Inter like the player but we are very far off from what Bologna are asking for him - nearly €25 million (£19.5m).

"The Wolfsburg interest? They were the first to move on Ramirez, but some of the figures are impossible for them too.”

Maxi Rodriguez 'honoured' to return to Newell's

Maxi Rodriguez could not hide his delight at securing a move back to first club Newell's Old Boys, as the former Liverpool midfielder was presented to fans in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.

More than 3000 supporters turned up to welcome the Argentina international back to Rosario after an absence of 10 years, following spells in Europe with Espanyol, Atletico Madrid and the Premier League outfit.

Maxi moved to the Lepra on a free transfer, agreeing his return after ending his time at Anfield with a year still remaining on his contract.

The 31-year-old delighted supporters by taking the field in his new shirt, and kicking balls into the stands. He also took the time to express his own joy at sealing the switch to his boyhood idols.

"This is the happiest day of my life, coming home where I have been given so much love," he told those present in the company of Newell's president Guillermo Lorente.

"For me it is an honour to wear this shirt.

I hope I can repay on the pitch all this affection that you guys have given me from the terraces. "There were some nervous times, a lot of tension, but luckily [the negotiations] finished positively.

It's been 10 long years but I am here now, I am back." Rodriguez made 57 appearances for Newell's in his first spell, scoring 20 times

Liverpool leading Tottenham in race to sign unsettled Chelsea star Sturridge

Liverpool are leading the race for Daniel Sturridge and are preparing a £10 million bid for the Chelsea forward.

Brendan Rodgers, the Reds’ manager, has made the 22-year-old one of his top targets and is confident of beating off competition from Tottenham.

Sturridge is currently being treated for viral meningitis, which is expected to keep him out of the Olympics, but is considering his future after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge last season.

Liverpool and Spurs have both made their interest in Sturridge known through third parties, with the Merseyside club ready to offer a more attractive salary package and a regular starting spot.

"There are a few clubs interested but Liverpool are ready to make a big move," a source told us.

"It would be a real statement for them and they could offer the player what he wants - in terms of money and playing time.

" The England international, whose situation is also being monitored by Arsenal and Manchester City, will hold talks with Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo about his future after finding himself relegated to the substitutes bench towards the end of last season.

Sturridge is understood to blame a lack of opportunities for his failure to claim a place in England’s Euro 2012 squad and fears for his chances next season after Chelsea signed £32m Eden Hazard from Lille.

The former Manchester City man has two years left on his contract and Chelsea will not be held to ransom over a new deal, meaning they could be willing to sell the versatile attacker this summer.

Sturridge currently earns £65,000-a-week, which is well within Liverpool’s budget, and he fits the profile the Reds are looking for as a young, talented player who will increase in value and improve.

New Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas is also a fan of Sturridge after they worked together briefly at Chelsea last season - but the City academy product grew frustrated with the wide role he was assigned under the Portuguese.

Sturridge scored 11 Premier League goals last season playing mainly from a position on the right wing but would prefer to play as a central striker.

Wigan warn Liverpool and Chelsea – Moses worth £12m

Liverpool and Chelsea have been told they will have to offer at least £12million to land Wigan striker Victor Moses.

Chelsea had a £6m bid for the frontman rejected while new Anfield chief Brendan Rodgers is also on the trail of the 21-year-old.

But Wigan owner Dave Whelan will play hardball over the fee in order to get the best possible deal for the Latics. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is reluctant to lose one of his star assets but accepts the club's need to sell to survive outweighs his team-building plans.

But Whelan and Martinez are pointing to the £9.5m they received from Aston Villa for Charles N'Zogbia last summer to help set the benchmark figure for Moses, who has chosen to play for homeland Nigeria despite playing for England at youth and under-21 level.

Wigan will argue that Moses' potential and youth makes him a far more valuable asset than N'Zogbia and that the £12m fee is not only realistic but also a firm stand they will not back down from, putting the onus back on both Chelsea and Liverpool.

Liverpool and Tottenham tracking Barcelona star

Ibrahim Afellay is ready for showdown talks over his Barcelona future - with Tottenham and Liverpool watching developments.

Afellay wants to speak to new coach Tito Vilanova in the next week to discuss his plans for the new season.

Following a surprise switch to the Nou Camp from PSV Eindhoven in 2011, Afellay has failed to shine at Barcelona.

Injuries have halted his progress and he has made just 20 La Liga appearances since moving there - and Afellay is eager to be more involved.

The 26-year-old was given a break after Holland's disastrous exit from Euro 2012 and he's set to return to Barcelona seeking answers.

Liverpool and Spurs, currently fighting it out over Gylfi Sigurdsson, are long term admirers and will keep an eye on the situation with Afellay.

However, the two Premier League clubs will have to fight it out with French side Lille, who have targeted Afellay as a replacement for Joe Cole.

Liverpool Complete £20m Uruguay star signing

GASTON Ramirez has achieved his goal of securing a move to a “big club” this summer, with Liverpool reportedly signing the Uruguay international for £20 million.

Although the young player has revealed he would have had no problem remaining at Bologna for another season, the 21-year-old has voiced his enthusiasm to move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

our source believes Liverpool have already done the deal to capture Gaston Ramirez and given that the Uruguayan would be joining a host of his countrymen at Anfield such a move sounds very plausible.

The talented young attacking midfielder has enjoyed two solid seasons in Italy with Bologna and has been linked with a move to Anfield for a number of months.

New boss Brendan Rodgers will no doubt be keen on strengthening a squad that completed Liverpool’s worst top tier finish in over 60 years last term and bringing in a creative talent who can help provide ammunition for the likes of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll would be very high on his list of priorities.

Liverpool’s American owners handed Kenny Dalglish £120m to invest in new players and didn’t see much in the way of success from their outlay and will hope that Rodgers manages his transfer funds more wisely.

Dalglish invested in a number of players who should have helped provide a cutting edge in the final third but the likes of Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing failed to make an impact and therefore Rodgers had to decide whether the players he currently possesses are up for the task or whether new recruits are needed.

This source would appear to suggest that he is more than willing to pay big sums to rectify the mistakes made last term.

Ramirez would join national team-mates Suarez and youngster Sebastian Coates at the Merseyside club.

Former Liverpool defender Roque dies aged 23 after losing cancer battle

Real Betis defender Miki Roque has died at the age of 23 following a fight against cancer.

Roque, who came through the youth ranks at Liverpool before returning to his homeland with Betis, underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his pelvis last year.

A statement on Betis' official website on Sunday read: 'The Real Betis player Miquel Roque Farrero, Miki Roque, had died today at the Instituto Dexeus de Barcelona hospital at the age of 23. 'Miki Roque had been battling pelvic cancer since March 2011, a struggle that he fought with fortitude and determination.

Real Betis send their deepest condolences to the Roque family. Roque spent four years at Liverpool between 2005 and 2009 and helped the club win the 2006 FA Youth Cup.

He made one substitute appearance for the first team, against Galatasaray in a Champions League match in December 2006.

While at Anfield Roque had loan spells with Oldham and Spanish sides Xerez and Cartagena before moving permanently to Betis in 2009, making his senior debut with the Spanish club in October 2010.

A Liverpool statement read: Liverpool Football Club was today saddened to hear news that former player Miki Roque has lost his battle with cancer aged 23.

Everyone at Liverpool Football Club would like to send their thoughts to Miki's family at this sad time.'

Roma star decides against Liverpool move

Liverpool target Bojan Krkic has committed his immediate future to Roma amid reports of further interest from the Premier League.

Krkic, who moved to Roma in the summer of 2011, endured a mixed first season in Serie A, managing just seven goals in 33 league outings.

The former Barcelona forward had been tipped to follow recently-departed manager Luis Enrique out of the Stadio Olimpico exit, but he insists he wants to continue his progress in the Italian capital, despite mooted interest from Liverpool.

I will return to Rome because I think is the best option," he told reporters.

"I am very happy and satisfied with my first year there. Everything depends on the season I have this year.

"It will be the highlight of my career. I want to focus on Serie A, which is quite hard, and to do my best."

Liverpool fan given four-year ban and fined for making racist gesture at Patrice Evra

A Liverpool supporter has been handed a four-year football ban after making a racist gesture towards Patrice Evra at Anfield in January.

TV footage during an FA Cup clash between the sides captured Phillip Gannon, a father of five who hails from Barmouth, Wales, impersonating a monkey in the direction of the Manchester United left-back, who had been at the centre of the racism controversy that saw Luis Suarez banned for eight matches in late 2011.

Images and footage of the former carpenter circulated on social networking website Twitter and complaints regarding his actions were made to the police.

Gannon claimed he was impersonating a Neanderthal and pleaded not guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence and using threatening or anti-social behaviour causing harassment, alarm or distress.

However, after a two-day trial at Liverpool Magistrates Court, he was convicted of the offence, with prosecutor Rob Girvan saying: "This gesture was caught on camera and it was seen globally not just nationally.

There was a volatile and tense atmosphere at the game because of a player on the pitch who said he was a victim of racial abuse.

The defendant saying he was impersonating a Neanderthal is just a childish excuse to cover up what he did. "It was clearly a racist gesture.

Gannon cannot attend Liverpool and England matches for a four-year period, while the ban also means he cannot be in the Liverpool city centre four hours before and after a match.

He was also fined a total of 180 pounds and ordered to pay prosecution costs of 300 pounds.

Brendan Rodgers to Secure First Liverpool Signing In £8m Deal This Week

LIVERPOOL are closing in on their first signing of the summer, with Gylfi Sigurdsson edging ever nearer to a move to Anfield.

The Post understands the Hoffenheim midfielder has informed new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers that he would like to join him on Merseyside, and that a deal for the Icelandic international could now go through this week, provided personal terms are agreed, and a medical examination is passed.

It is understood that he will speak to Sigurdsson by telephone, but Swansea are resigned to missing out on a player who netted seven goals in 19 appearances during a productive end to the last campaign.

Liverpool would be expected to pay a fee of around £8m, with Swansea having negotiated a discounted price as part of his loan arrangement back in January.

Brendan Rodgers knows Gylfi Sigurdsson very well, both from his time in charge at Reading and last term when he was Swansea City boss, and it is growing increasingly likely that the Northern Irishman is set to link up with the impressive young Icelandic midfielder.

The 22 year old has made it fairly clear that he is keen on a move to Anfield and an £8m move to the Merseyside club is on the cards, despite reported interest from a number of other Premier League sides. Sigurdsson is a type of player Liverpool badly need.

Despite the signing of a number of midfield and attacking signings over the past 18 months the club still lacks a cutting edge and creativity linking midfield and attack.

The likes of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing have failed to deliver in terms of both goals and assists.

The Hoffenheim man showed last term during his half season loan at the Liberty Stadium that he can be a very effective performer who could excel in a Liverpool side this coming season and at £8m he is a cost effective addition to a squad that could well do with intelligent investment.

Joe Cole to be given fresh start at Liverpool, says Rodgers

The 30-year-old joined the Reds in the summer or 2010 but, after struggling for form in his first season, was shipped out on loan to French side Lille for the entirety of last term by then boss Kenny Dalglish.

Cole has revealed his desire to prove himself at Liverpool and Rodgers is willing to give him a second chance, along with other fringe members of the squad.

"I met up with Joe Cole when I was in Spain, [and] I certainly know he's looking to come back, " Rodgers told the club’s official website.

“I've got to assess all the players. With the likes of Joe - he's a very talented player.

He's obviously gone out to Lille and done very well and he has the opportunity to come back here and show his qualities.

"For me it's fresh for everyone. I'll be new into the club. Of course I know lots of the players and their qualities but Joe is obviously a player who'll want to come back and show his worth to the group.

"I suppose going forward and over the course of pre-season I just need to decide the types of players who are going to fit into the function and the philosophy and the structure of the team.

" Rodgers believes that his appointment gives everyone at the club the chance for a new start and, while complimenting Dalglish’s reign, he is looking for an added impetus among the players.

"When a new manager comes into any club, it always sparks off that renewed motivation for players,” he continued. “The cycle with Kenny was a terrific cycle but I'm a different tactician and a different type of person and that will give all the players an opportunity to perform.”

Liverpool Manager Brendan Rogers Targets Sensational Move For Man United Striker Dimitar Berbatov

Rogers interested in the Bulgarian but will face competition from abroad.

Dimitar Berbatov could be set for a dramatic move from Manchester United to Liverpool, becoming the first place to move between the clubs since 1964.

New Anfield boss Brendan Rogers is preparing to break one of English football’s big taboos this summer and pursue a United player.

The former Swansea manager believes the classy forward could be the perfect foil for misfiring duo Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Rogers, 39, is friendly with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and is set to make tentative enquiries about Berbatov’s availability this week.

The former Tottenham striker is set to leave Old Trafford this summer after the falling down the pecking order in Manchester. He made just 5 league starts last term with Ferguson preferring Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez up front.

The 31-year-old is now deemed surplus to requirements, with support striker Shinji Kagawa having already signed and Polish international Robert Lewandowski a target.

But Rogers is convinced the Bulgarian – who finished the Premier League’s top scorer the season before last – still has a lot to offer and will fight to bring him to Anfield even if fans oppose the move.

So intense is the clubs’ rivalry that no player has been directly transfered between them since Phil Chisnall made the switch from United to Liverpool in 1964.

United refused to allow unhappy defender Gabriel Heinze a move to Anfield in 2007 but want Berbatov off the wage bill so are willing to listen to Liverpool’s proposal.

Rogers will have to beat off competition from big-spending European clubs PSG and Malaga, both of whom are also interested in signing Berbatov.

Salomon Kalou on Liverpool hit-list, according to transfer rivals' boss

New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers knows the forward from their time together at Stamford Bridge, and now it seems the Northern Irishman is lining up the 26-year-old free agent to bolster his attacking options at Anfield.

However, Bundesliga side Schalke are also attempting to snap up the Ivory Coast international, and remain confident of landing their man despite this latest interest from the Reds. ‘Liverpool are in the market for him [Kalou], but I know he wants to leave England.

That can be an advantage for us,’ said Schalke’s boss Huub Stevens. The Dutch manager had also targeted Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, but Stevens admits signing his countryman will be a tricky task.

‘It is clear that Rafael is a very good player. But first we would have to sell players, and even then, a transfer is difficult,’ added Stevens. Van Der Vaart has previously opened the door to a move away from White Hart Lane, despite insisting he’s happy in north London.

‘There is always interest,’ said midfielder. ‘I'm happy in England and will remain there.

But in football you never know. That's what I wanted to say and no more than that.

The 27-year-old midfielder looks set to return to Anfield after AC Milan decided against signing the Italy international on a permanent basis at the end of the season

The Italy international spent last season on loan at AC Milan but the Serie A outfit have decided against taking up their option to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis, with club CEO Adriano Galliani admitting that he will sit down with the Reds in June to try to thrash out a compromise agreement.

With Liverpool now on the verge of officially confirming Rodgers as their new boss, the next step as far as Aquilani is concerned is establishing whether he has a future at Anfield.

"It's necessary to understand if there are the foundations for an agreement that satisfies everyone," the former Roma man told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'm waiting for Liverpool to decide on the identity of their new coach and reorganise themselves. Then we will have to meet in order to figure out their plans.

"The only thing I can do is make the right decision. For me, it is important to have the opportunity to make a contribution, to play well and regularly."

Aquilani joined Liverpool from Roma in 2009 but his debut season in English football was blighted by injury problems and he was loaned to Juventus the following year.
