London Olympic Medals table : China still leading the pack

"BOLT AT THE DOUBLE"

Usain Bolt began his bid to complete the sprint double at the London Olympics by cruising into the 200m semi-finals in a time of 20.39 seconds.

The 25-year-old Jamaican was joined by countrymen Yohan Blake and Warren Weir, with America's Wallace Spearmon, France's Christophe Lemaitre and Briton Christian Malcolm also through.

GB's James Ellington failed to qualify after finishing sixth in his heat. The semi-finals are on Wednesday with the final on Thursday.

Four-time Olympic champion Bolt, who successfully defended his 100m crown on Sunday, is also attempting to retain his 200m title from Beijing.

After what was approaching a jog, he told BBC Sport: "The crowd is always wonderful. They play an important role in my running and I love my 200m.

"I try to do my part - I know what comes with winning, so all I have to do is try and enjoy it."

Blake, who won silver behind Bolt in the 100m, also ran a comfortable heat in 20.38secs and said afterwards: "I'm good and I'm healthy. I'm giving credit to my coach because the 100m taught me a lot. "It was my first medal in the Olympics.

The 200m is my better event because I have more speed endurance."

Despite his vast experience, Malcolm, 33, said he was anxious about competing in front of such a huge home crowd. But Ellington, who auctioned himself on eBay to raise funds for his training, was clearly disappointed with his run as he could only manage 21.23secs in the final heat.

"I don't know what to say," the 26-year-old said. "It's the slowest race I've done all year. I felt good in the warm-up and I thought I was going to run fast, but came off the bend and had no gas left.

"Training has been going well in Portugal, so I'm just gutted. I just feel like I've taken someone else's place and I feel like I let the team down."

Michael Phelps becomes most decorated Olympian after 15th gold

The American swimmer was met with raucous applause as he led the US home to victory in the final leg of the men’s 4x200metres freestyle relay, taking his personal medal tally to 19.

It helped him overcome his earlier frustration at coming second in the 200m butterfly final behind South Africa’s Chad Le Clos.

Phelps led the race with 15m to go but threw away a winning position in a thrilling finish. But there was never any danger of that in the relay as the US won at a canter from second-placed France and China in third.

Britain’s men finished sixth. ‘I thanked [my team-mates] for helping get to this moment,’ Phelps said. ‘I told those guys I wanted a big lead in the last leg and they gave it to me.

I just wanted to hold on, I just wanted to thank them for allowing me to have this moment.’ Chinese teenager Ye Shiwen has been the subject of whispers over the world-record time she set to win the women’s 400m individual medley at the weekend.

And she took another gold as she set an Olympic record in the 200m IM, with Britain’s Hannah Miley seventh. Portsmouth’s Caitlin McClatchey was also seventh in the 200m freestyle final, a race won by the USA’s Allison Schmitt in an Olympic-record time.

Michael Jamieson broke the British record twice on his way to the 200m breaststroke final. The Scot beat the mark set by Kris Gilchrist at the 2008 Games.

He then bettered that in the evening, touching in two minutes 8.20 seconds to qualify fastest for Wednesday's final.

Andrew Willis qualified third fastest in a new English-record time of 2:08.47. Britain’s Jemma Lowe also made it through to the women’s 200m butterfly final.

Brazil 3-1 Belarus, Egypt held: Neymar dazzles to send Selecao through to Olympics quarter-finals

Brazil came from behind to beat Belarus 3-1 at Old Trafford thanks to a stunning second half free-kick and last-minute assist from Neymar.

The favourites for the gold medal had gone behind inside nine minutes when Renan Bressan popped up to put Belarus into a shock lead.

But Pato levelled the scores six minutes later when he headed home.

Brazil continued to press and were rewarded in the 65th minute when Santos star Neymar showed why he is so highly rated and curled a free-kick into the top corner to put his side ahead.

The winger wasn't done though and finished off Belarus with a wonderful backheeled assist in the final minute, which new Chelsea signing Oscar sent into the net with ease.

Egypt's hopes of qualifying for the last eight of the Olympic football tournament took a blow as they drew 1-1 with New Zealand at Old Trafford after wasting several chances.

Egypt fell behind to a 16th minute strike from West Brom's Chris Wood, but Mohamed Salah equalised from close-range at the end of the first half.

The Africans could have had at least seven goals by the final whistle but a mixture of last-ditch Kiwi defending, and some awful finishing from Egypt, meant they had to settle for a draw in what was a poor-quality contest.

Egypt will have to beat Belarus on Wednesday to qualify for the quarter-finals, while minnows New Zealand will have to beat the South American side to progress from Group C.

Giovani dos Santos' two-goal cameo from off the bench gave Mexico a 2-0 win over Gabon and sent El Tri top of Group B on Sunday.

Giovani, who struggled to earn a place under Harry Redknapp at Tottenham, was introduced as a second-half substitute and broke the deadlock after 63 minutes.

He then scored from the penalty spot in injury-time after Gabon defender Henri Ndong was sent off for a professional foul.

China's Yi Siling wins first gold of olympic games

Yi Siling of China won the first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympics with victory in the women's 10m air rifle at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

The 23-year-old world number one and gold medal favourite beat Poland's Sylwia Bogacka into second, with Yu Dan of China taking bronze.

Bogacka was leading until the eighth attempt of the 10-shot final when a wayward effort handed Yi first place.

Defending champion Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic finished fourth.
