Cesar Azpilicueta 'back in Chelsea's transfer plans' as Maicon demands too much

The Marseille star was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer, but the Blues then investigated the possibility of deals for Inter Milan's Maicon and Lille's Mathieu Debuchy Reports in France claim the Champions League holders have now returned to their original plan and have contacted Marseille about the availability of the 22-year-old.

Newcastle are also rumoured to have a tentative interest in the Spain Under-21 international, but Magpies boss Alan Pardew's preferred target is Debuchy.

News that Chelsea are again considering a move for Azpilicueta suggests that their deal for Maicon is off, despite reports this week that the Brazilian was on his way to London.

Real Madrid were also keen on Maicon, but pulled out of the race to sign him after learning that he expected a contract worth £4million a year.

That figure may also have deterred Chelsea, as the former Monaco star is 31 later this month and would have no resale value.
