Jetro Willems proved to be a rare positive for Holland during the tournament, starting all three matches and impressing, as the Dutch were surprisingly eliminated in the group stages.
A fast, athletic and technically gifted left-back, the 18-year-old is rated as one of the biggest talents in his country, after breaking into the PSV team last season, featuring 20 times and scoring once.
Willems is widely expected to remain in the Eredivisie next term, but he has earned a serious admirer in the Red Devils, with their scout Martin Ferguson passing a positive dossier on the player on to the club’s coaching staff.
Ferguson watched all three of Willems’ matches at Euro 2012, and according to reports in Holland, he has now recommended that assistant manager Mike Phelan fly out to watch him when the new season kicks off.
it is believed that impressive teenage talent Jetro Willems could be snapped up for a fee in the region of £10m and that’s a sum that Sir Alex Ferguson may well consider offering for a player who appears to have a great deal of potential given the mature displays the 18 year old has put in for both club and country.
Man United are said to be on the look out for left-back options, with Patrice Evra’s poor form continuing in the last 12 months, and versatile Brazilian Fabio set to move on loan to QPR after failing to break into the side on a regular basis.
Rotterdam born Willems only moved to PSV from Sparta last summer but impressed Bert Van Marwijk sufficiently to secure a regular berth in his national team set-up.
Clearly PSV Eindhoven cottoned on to the potential interest in their recent signing by offering the teenager a new improved contract in April which is to run until the summer of 2016, however interest from Man United may lead to the youngster pushing for an exit not least because Dick Advocaat’s side failed to secure a spot in the Champions League for the coming season.
