River fan dies after Boca Unidos violence

A crucial victory for River Plate has been overshadowed by tragedy, after it was confirmed that a young fan who was stabbed during Sunday's meeting with Boca Unidos died from his injuries.

Saucedo had been rushed to the facility after receiving a knife wound in the Estadio Monumental's Platea Sivori section, after medics initially tried to treat the injury in the stadium.

Details of the attack have not been clarified either by police or the club, but first impressions suggest that Saucedo may have been caught up in the internal battle fought between members of River's barra brava, the 'Borrachos del Tablon'.

If this version of events is confirmed, the Millo face the prospect of once again seeing the Monumental suspended from use; as happened at the start of the 2011-12 season, following shocking violence which accompanied their relegation from the Primera Division.

On the pitch, a late goal from Rogelio Funes Mori sealed a 2-1 victory for the home team over Corrientes-based Boca, taking them to the top of the Nacional B pending Rosario Central's clash on Monday evening against Patronato. Matias Almeyda's men also enjoy a three-point lead over third-placed Instituto with two games to play. The top two teams gain automatic promotion to the top flight.
