Van Persie criticised for phone call

Feyenoord legend Willem van Hanegem has criticised Robin van Persie’s actions directly after Netherlands’ shock Euro 2012 defeat to Denmark.

The Arsenal talisman was seen making a phone call on the pitch immediately after the conclusion of Oranje's 1-0 reverse in their tournament opener.

Van Persie endured a poor game against a disciplined Denmark side, and looked nowhere near his best.

Van Hanegem believes the Dutchman’s post-match actions are a sign of disrespect and that the damaging loss did not mean anything to him.

"What kind of impression does this make?” Van Hanegem wrote in his column in Algemeen Dagblad. “You just lost a very important match where you missed a few very good chances and then the people see you calling on the side of the pitch! "I really think this is impossible to believe and [Bert] Van Marwijk should talk to him about this.

“I don't get why he was calling there. It's something you shouldn't do and I have never seen this in my life.
" Despite the criticism, Van Hanegem is adamant that Van Persie should start in Oranje’s next Euro 2012 match against Germany. "You have to [start him], because if you don't you can send him home and you can't use him anymore.

Besides that, you can give him the feeling that the loss against Denmark is all his fault," he added.

“Van Marwijk would make it a lot easier on himself if he started with one defensive midfielder and [Klass-Jan] Huntelaar and Van Persie up front."
