Cash-strapped Portsmouth's team sheet for Wimbledon friendly empty

Troubled Portsmouth are due to play a friendly against AFC Wimbledon this week - but such is the extent of their financial problems that it appears they are not expecting to field any players at all.

Pompey are currently teetering on the edge of existence with administrators warning they could go out of business within the week.

Such dire circumstances mean the team have had to shed playing staff, and it seems the club don't even know who, if anyone, will be available to pull on the famous blue shirt against Wimbledon.

The game is due to be played next Wednesday - but it seems pretty unfair for the south-west London side to go up against a Pompey team consisting of... well... no one.

The club's supporters must be dreaming of the days when they had more than five players who were confirmed members of the squad.

The five remaining stars - who are being urged to surrender their highly-paid contracts in order to save the club - are still included in the club's first-team section on the official website.

However, it seems unlikely they will take the field due to the ongoing negotiations over their futures.

Cash-strapped Portsmouth tried several money-making schemes to help them last season, including getting players to sell tickets for a game against Leeds United in the Championship.

However, after failing to stave off another administration - their second in two years and third in the club's recent history - the League One outfit now face a winding-up order.

We don't want to make light of Pompey's serious situation, but maybe they should go after AFC Wimbledon assistant manager Stuart Cash…
