Chelsea Make “Serious Approach” for Spanish Full-Back

Chelsea’s attempts to sign Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta appear to have advanced after Marseille president Vincent Labrune revealed that he had received a “serious approach” from the European champions.

The Blues are desperate to sign a new right-back after releasing Jose Bosingwa earlier this summer, and French newspaper L’Equipe claims that the Stamford Bridge side have courted Azpilicueta for several weeks.

And president Labrune’s admission indicates that Azpilicueta, 23, could soon be on his way to west London, where he would link up with compatriots Fernando Torres, Juan Mata and Oriol Romeu.

Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo admitted last week that his side could be forced into selling Azpilicueta to make way for new signings, and reports claim that the transfer could happen soon as they have lined up a move for Poland defender Marc Boenisch, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Werder Bremen earlier this summer.

Chelsea certainly need a new right-back having released Jose Bosingwa and with Roberto Di Matteo seemingly preferring to use Branislav Ivanovic in his preferred centre back position, and a move for Cesar Azpilicueta would be a sensible one to make this summer.

With Marseille apparently happy to consider offers for the Spaniard, who may feel a high profile move to Stamford Bridge could help his garner a first senior national team cap, a move to West London has taken a step closer.

Chelsea have spent upwards of £65m to bring Marko Marin, Eden Hazard, Thorgan Hazard and Oscar to the club during the current transfer window as Blues owner Roman Abramovich looks to build on last term’s Champions League triumph.

22 year old Pamplona born Azpilicueta moved to Marseille from Osasuna two years ago and has proved a consistent force on the right hand side of the Ligue 1 side’s defence.
